A significant outage has been confirmed by Verizon, impacting some of its mobile phone customers. The disruption has led to numerous complaints on social media platforms regarding issues with calls, texts, and internet access.
The company has acknowledged the problem and stated that their engineers are actively working to identify and resolve the issue promptly.
The outage appears to have begun around 11 am ET, with approximately 100,000 customer reports logged on a popular service outage tracking website.
Customers have expressed frustration over the lack of cell service and inability to connect to the network. Many iPhone users on the Verizon network reported their devices being stuck in ‘SOS’ mode, limiting them to emergency calls via satellite.
Verizon currently has 114.2 million subscribers in the United States.
While relatively infrequent, cell service disruptions have caused widespread issues this year. In February, another major carrier experienced an 11-hour network outage across the United States, preventing many customers from making calls, sending texts, or accessing the internet. The same carrier faced additional brief outages in June and August.
Experts suggest that network outages are typically caused by a combination of three issues: overloaded networks in major cities, problematic software updates, and various technical problems.
Telecommunication companies are often reluctant to disclose detailed reasons for their outages, especially for brief disruptions lasting only a few hours. This lack of transparency can be particularly frustrating for customers who rely on these networks for their livelihoods, such as ride-share drivers. Mobile networks are also crucial for accessing emergency services like 911 while on the move and for maintaining global connections with friends, family, and colleagues.
