Rocky debris could create the first human-made meteor shower known as the Dimorphids, according to a new study. The debris was blasted away when NASA’s DART spacecraft intentionally collided with the tiny asteroid Dimorphos in 2022. The collision successfully changed the asteroid’s motion, and scientists estimate that the debris could reach the vicinity of Earth and Mars within one to three decades. Some smaller fragments could even reach Earth’s atmosphere within the next 10 years. However, none of the debris poses a risk to Earth as it would disintegrate in the upper atmosphere.
