Eating Ultraprocessed Food Linked to Reduced Lifespan

High consumption of ultraprocessed food may lead to a lifespan reduction of over 10%, based on a long-term study involving more than 500,000 participants. Adjusted data showed that the risk rose to 15% for men and 14% for women. The study identified diet soft drinks and sugary soft drinks as the top contributors to ultraprocessed food consumption. Ultraprocessed breads and baked goods were also common. The research adds to previous findings that associate ultraprocessed food intake with cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, but not cancer-related deaths. Diet drinks, processed meats, and soft drinks were particularly associated with mortality risk. Experts suggest opting for whole foods and reading nutrition labels for sodium and added sugar levels to reduce ultraprocessed food intake.
